BIODELEAR is an ambitious project which foresees the development of an integrated pest management strategy (IPMS) for the sustainable management for the control of Med fly (Ceratitis capitata) in the absence of insecticides using the mass trapping technique with a novel attractant which is no toxic to the people and to the environment, for the application in intensively cultivated Mediterranean areas.

This scenario will be integrated to strategy through a series of actions and by using as an example the citrus trees, which are intensively cultivated in the inland of Chios, Greece for the last 500 years.

Apart from the development of sustainable integrated pest management strategy at local/regional scale, the project focuses also on exploitation and valorization of the ecosystem indicators before the implementation of the integrated pest management strategy (IPMS)  and after the implementation of the integrated pest management strategy (IPMS).

The aim is to recover the ecosystem and to measure this recovery in the implemented protection of med fly free of insecticides.

The indicators of recovery will be 1st Measuring the soil analysis 2nd  the residues of insecticides on the fruit and in the soil 3rd the Biological diversity on the soil as well on the canopy of the trees and 4th the % fruit infestation. All these above will be examined before the implementation of the integrated pest management strategy (IPMS) and after the implementation of the integrated pest management strategy (IPMS).

The proposal foresees a well-structured plan, which will be implemented for the protection of the med fly with a novel attractant in the mass trapping technique with duration of five years actions where the demonstration of a sustainable integrated pest management strategy (IPMS) will be achieved.

The BIODELEAR foresees the know how from the integrated pest management strategy (IPMS) to pass over to farmers, stakeholders and local authorities for a sustainable agriculture practices with the aim to expanded to other regions of Greece and Mediterranean countries interested in the integrated pest management strategy (IPMS) free of insecticides from the protection of the med fly.
